title: Adding a Github Pages Blog To Your Website
---
I've been looking into moving my website over from Wordpress.com (which I've used since 2006) over to Github Pages which is part of my [effort](http://jeremybush.me/blog/2015/01/15/updating-my-website/) to update my website. I love Github Pages because it allows me to write my blog posts using Markdown (which I love) instead of Wordpress' HTML editor.
The problem was that I wanted my blog posts linked from my main website page instead of just having them show up at `http://jeremybush.me/blog`. It turns out this is really easy if you know how!
## Step 1: Create Your Blog
The first step is creating your blog using Github Pages which [is very well documented](https://help.github.com/articles/creating-a-github-pages-site-from-scratch). You'll end up with something like this:
username.github.io/
├── _config.yml
├── index.html
└── _posts/
├── 2015-03-17-hello-world.md
└── ...
## Step 2: Create Your Website
Now create your website which doesn't have any links or pages dedicated towards your blog.
username.github.io/
├── _config.yml
├── index.html
└── _posts/
├── 2015-03-17-hello-world.md
└── ...
## Step 3: Add Your Blog To Your Website
Now add an index.html file at `username.github.io/blog/index.html` which links back out to all your blog posts.
username.github.io/
├── _config.yml
├── index.html
├── blog/
│ └── index.html
└── _posts/
├── 2015-03-17-hello-world.md
└── ...
This file should be very simple:
{{ site.title }} - {{ page.title }} {% for post in site.posts limit:10 %}{{ post.date | date_to_string }} {{ post.title }}
{{ post.excerpt }}
{{ post.date | date_to_long_string }}
{% endfor %}{{ paginator.previous_page_path | prepend: site.baseurl | replace:'page/', '' }} « Previous | Next »{{ paginator.next_page_path | prepend: site.baseurl | replace:'page/', '' }}
